President Trump says asylum system ‘is a scam’

President Trump says asylum system ‘is a scam’
Come on all this, let’s bring an Eric. Felten is a columnist for the Washington examiner. So are there any appetite? Do you think he’ll to tighten the immigration laws such as addressing what the President says are the loopholes that he claims are being exploited? You know, I don’t think there is, and I and I think this is because you see that the president frustrated with Capital Hills frustrated with Democrats in Congress, moving to act on his emergency powers that he can Acclaim and that may allow him to spend more money. On the wall, but at the same time it it hurts his ability to then go back to Capitol Hill and say, let’s work together on changing the Asylum laws so that we no longer have laws that encourage people to get into the country, claimed Asylum and then Kind of disappear into the country and never show up for their Asylum hearings that happened years later. So you have this problem of the president, losing his executive powers and those that use of executive powers, making it less likely that he can get the political cooperation that he needs to address. Other parts of the problem really address the Asylum laws. His administration has been tightening them up or trying to such as if your an unaccompanied child that you need a guardian or a parent in the US, are ready to get Asylum, and the present yesterday was pretty scathing. He called Asylum laws, a scam amoc some of the Asylum Seekers liking them to UFC fighters ears. What the president said, you’ve ever seen, people that look like they should be fighting for the UFC. They read it at littlepage, given by lawyers that are all over the place and tell him what to say. I am very fearful for my life. I am very worried that I will be accosted goodbye. No, no he’ll do the accosting for women and children fleeing the violence with Hoda and gang violence and murder and crime, because the president have a point or is he too harsh? He has a sensitive how to entertain his audience. Certainly, and the problem for him is that to change the rules he’s either going to need the cooperation of Congress or cooperation of the Judiciary, and it doesn’t seem that he’s got either of those lined up and the way he’s approaching the issue, I don’t think, facilitates Him getting cooperation from the Judiciary or Capitol Hill, so how did he find the issue Syracuse University? These are pretty surprising to many people in in fiscal year, 2018 Syracuse University says 65 % to 55 % of Asylum applications in court or denied Chinese numbers 69 % from El Salvador. I did not the overwhelming number 69 % Guatemala even more 75 % in court Asylum Seekers or denied Honduras, the greatest 76 %. So once this Asylum Seekers get into the court system according to Syracuse there tonight so no way does that actually back up the president Point yeah and what do you do about it and what you need to do is make the court system more robust so that People can, in a timely fashion, get a hearing by the court, because at this point it’s taking years between when people are put into the before they get a hearing on their Asylum charge. And we don’t have the facilities to maintain that population. And so the population is released into the country and that to the president’s complained, but he’s not in a position to really do anything about it. As long as there’s not the resources to make the the legal system more robust. But they have an increased to call for the ink the number of immigration judges and, according to the Department of Justice, 92 %, 92 % of Asylum Seekers do show up for their court hearing 72 %. They say overall program. Every month the President says more than a million knocking on our door at the ports of entry for Asylum and is backlog is just getting worse. Well, I think the president needs to figure out a strategy that he can stick with. Four more than a week at a time – and we look back at the beginning of this last week, everybody was talking about ports of Entry being closed and would would there be a shortage of avocados and then by the middle of the week the president was prey. Mexico for making a bigger effort to stop Central American migrants at Mexico, Southern border and then by now by Saturday. The president was calling for stricter Andrea datfit at ports of Entry again claiming that Mexico’s not doing enough and so there’s a sort of chaotic response that doesn’t really help the president in addressing the issue and does I think, surprised. People is a More than 70 % of your sound applications from those three Central American countries that are flooding here. They are denied, but, as you point out that could take years to get to that process. Good to see you. Thank you Erik thanks. So much
Report: El Salvador: 69% denied, Guatemala: 75% denied, Honduras: 76% denied asylum.
